I'm extremely thankful for that. I've been meaning to revive this site for a long time, but several things have came up on my life and I haven't been able to find time for it...

As a guy that really, really likes to draw, I was bound to start doing my own little animations from time to time! And since I love playing viedogames, well, that's also a plus. L4D2! If you don't play this game I'm not sure if you'll get it, but... pretty much everyone has played it at least once. I think. If you haven't, it's quite fun.

This was made some time ago. But I never showcased it in this blog!

I love cartoons, but they take a whole lot of time to do correctly! I wish I had a bunch of people working for me so I could crank animations at a better pace, but I guess that's a bit too much to ask right now, haha.

Some of my favourite Pokémon + Fiverr!

Not too long ago, I got caught in the tumblr fever of drawing your favourite pokémon. So I just went ahead and finished a whooping amount of 3 little critters but who cares, they're awesome.

Ghost type: Duskull! He's the perfect mix between cute and awesome that made me fall in love with Pokémon as a kid.

Water type: Slowpoke. I mean look at this guy's face.

AW YEAH NORMAL TYPE IN DA HOUSE SMEARGLE'IN IT UP THIS GUY ACTUALLY DRAWS AS AN ATTACK HOW COULD I NOT LOVE HIM 

Ahem! And in non-pokémon related news, I have a Fiverr account now! So you can actually request drawings from me in there! Drawings like the ones I showed you. If you want something a bit more complex, we could always discuss it, check this first to get an idea and then drop a few lines, either by commenting or in the fancy contact form to the right!

Spider-man + The Human Torch

Marvel comics time! Like most people I'm really excited about upcoming Marvel films, but I'm still bummed that due to licensing issues we won't see Spidey teaming up with the Fantastic Four or the Avengers anytime soon...

This was actually drawn some time ago, on a whim. It's done straight ahead on paper with a cd marker-- what I mean by that is that there was no under drawing, nothing made on pencil. It's really fun because you can't erase your mistakes, so you're more concious about what you're doing, but since I was just doing it for fun I wasn't worried about the result, heh

I hope to get back to my comics soon!

Hello there! I haven't uploaded anything of importance this week. My pokémon comic is getting inked as we speak (read? whatever!) so in the meantime I just decided to upload... a random amount of drawings I've had laying around.

These are made in different styles and techniques, so I think it's a good overview of the things I can do. Not al of them are completely finished but I hope you sort of get the idea behind most of the pieces (read: I hope you can forgive the lack of context and my site sucking up your bandwidth!)

Traditional Inking Pointers!

I recorded a video tutorial! A few people have asked me about how I ink things traditionaly (ie with ink on paper) and I thought this could be an interesting way to show the basics.

Even if you're just starting artistically, this can help you a lot! I wish I had known more about that stupid inking asterisk when I got started, haha.

At first this was going to be some sort of excercise on non linear narrative and all that stuff that current comic book artists like to do

But then I decided that it looks better as a storybook, anyway!

Thoughts on male face drawing

A tutorial in how to draw male faces? Nein! It's more of a train of thought kind of thing. I'm not really good atexplaining how I do things, but I can say a thing or two about why I do them.

So, let's start with a standard male face. A presentable face. The kind of face you would introduce to your parents.

Not too bad. But why do you assume right away that it's a male face? After all, it's a drawing--my particular interpretation of a 3D object on 2D media. I just used lines and yet I made you assume that this was a male. Let's delve on it.

Here's a quick cartoon of a girly face:

Now, as you can see, this isn't as realistic as the first male face but several of the key components of what makes a face femenine are in here. Now, this is important! Female faces, in general, have always been seen as something symbolic. You can tell that by looking at paintings from every culture, from renacentism to japanese portraits. Female faces are softer. Female faces are prettier if you use less lines. Hell, even when wearing make up, women try to accentuate their features first! Not the shape of the face, they want to make you notice their eyes, their lips, etc. Even stuff like earrings and necklaces drive attention away from the shape and help frame their features.

Males don't usually wear make up, and even those who do use it to accentuate their shapes. This is important. Male faces are anything BUT symbolic, they're statements! One look at a guy's face in any piece of art and you can tell right away if he's nice, mean, angry, tired, sad, happy, etc. This probably has something to do with the patriarchal ways of our society but I'm not completely sure. The point is, with guys, the "secret" is to find a solid shape of the face, and then add the features.

You're basically sculpting in paper, if you will.

Here's an example of how I usually draw male proportions and head shapes:

It's pretty easy to understand. This, I think, it's the most common set of proportions. It obviously changes according to the individual, but most of the time people fall into this standard set of measurements--however, you must ALWAYS remember that THE SHAPE OF THE HEAD IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT from person to person, and it's something that's actually noticeable if you look closely!

Here are some male heads I drew in different styles:

Even the cartoony ones have head shapes that work "as statements". Most cartoony ladies are always drawn in a way that "makes them pretty" ie they delve into symbolism. I'm not saying that I agree with that choice (I think cartoons are meant to be silly wheter you're a boy or a girl!) but I'm just pointing this out.

As always, there's a constant variation of rendering depending on the artist and their own sensibilities but I think this is a good starting place. Drawing people is one of the hardest things to do right, mainly because we're all insanely different from each other when you look carefully! But males in general are a lot more simple because you have lots more freedom when you choose to render their faces. I went crazy with lines in the faces of some of these drawings and they don't look as awful as they would do if I had drawn girls...!

Hello there! As you may remember, I was making a Pokémon comic about MissingNo.!

Hmmmmm.....

SO!

Now I've got to finish it! I hope... anyway, instead of brand new pages, you get brand new old pages! This probably makes me the strangest comic artist ever but hear me out: like I said in the blog about the original page 12,  that was the first time I did everything on the computer. From the begining, this comic was meant to be an excercise on traditional + digital media, and that little venture into full-digital artwork wasn't some of my best work, and I feel that it kinda goes against the comic itself.

(Non-artist translation = That page sucks, and I didn't like it, and now I draw better!)

I'ts also a bit jarring to see my artistic evolution. Just check around in the blog! My old drawings used to be awful. Nowadays I draw a lot better. It's still awful, but presentable awful, the kind of awful you would introduce to your parents.

Let's hope some people still show interest on this. A big thank you to reddit and tumblr, and all the users in those sites that loved my work. This page is dedicated to you!

Poison Ivy

I'm not dead, hahaha.

Man, I suck at drawing women. I'm slowly improving, though.
I love comicbooks, but currently the trend in mainstream superhero comics doesn't appeal to me. I admire the hard work the artists put in there, but most of the time the drawings are just too... muddled? I don't know, it's not something you pick up right away if you're not artistically inclined, but it's something that's always on the back of your mind while attempting to read a present-day comicbook... it feels overworked, I dunno. I dislike it, personally. Comics shouldn't have extremely serious drawings, we're still dealing with people with superpowers and their undies in the outside! DC, take note of that. Marvel at least tries to have a lot of different artstyles all over their books...

This was done traditionally for the first stage, I just used a thin marker over a pencil sketch. Then I colored it on Photoshop. I think it looks interesting!

Oh, well. Gotta get back to work!

My thesis is still on the work, you gotta wish me luck on that. And yes, the fabled Pokémon comic! It's still on the back on my head. Don't worry, I won't leave you hanging. I mean, I've already kinda done that, but you get my point. I love to draw those characters, but REAL LIFE gets in the way pretty often. Sigh. I have to learn how to draw faster...

And wish me luck on my chinese glass stomach as well. EEERGH.

(By the way, has anyone else been following the Olympics? I love Olympic season, everyone's so jingoistic, but at the same time so happy! It's pretty cool!)

I'm Back

It's been so long! Half a year or so. But I've returned. With a new blog layout and everything.

I don't think I'll be able to blog stuff everyday. But I'll try to keep you entertained. And to work on my art more. Sheesh!

I'm really thankful to everyone who posted here, to all my followers, to the people that wrote to me asking about the blog. You're all awesome and you're the ones that brought me back, basically.

I stopped updating because I had too many things on my hands at the same time. Currently, I'm only working on my thesis, and the blog will be one of the few things that (I hope) can keep me sane!

Soooo I'm taking requests! Ask me what do you want to see from me on the comments (currently powered by disqus, I think it's more friendly to the visitors whitout a blogger account). Also, I'm still taking commisions and the like. Don't be afraid to ask!

...Yes, I understand this is an art blog, and that you want to see art in here. But aren't words an art on their own? Specially ASCII art, some of that is crazy. I remember I knew a guy that had a bunch of ASCII porn in a  floppy disk and flipped out when I saved something on top of that (It was the 90's, you should have been there).

Ah, er, where was I? Oh, yes, the tech review!

Well, today my faithful Compaq laptop died after a long 4 years battle against destiny (I suppose). So after a minute of silence, I got a new computer: A Lenovo Z470. And it makes a world of difference.

You know, computers are insane. They age really, really fast, like that guy in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You just take them out of the box, and BAM, they devaluate ASAP. New models keep coming out at blinding speed, and that smart shopping decision that you once were proud of becomes an almost inmediatelly regretful stupid moment.

So with that in mind this time I tried to buy something that wouldn't break on it's own, that had reasonable specs and that would give the less amount of regrets possible. A daunting task, mainly because I had to buy it on a physical store and my city is pretty small.
And alas, the Lenovo Z470 does it fairly well. Intel Core i5! Nvidia Geforce! Windows 7! A sturdy case! Runs Graphic Design Software at a very good pace! This thing only needs to dispense ice cream to become my favourite electronic device.

What? Oh, wow, cry me a bloody river. At least I can play Skyward Sword on you.

It's leaps and bounds ahead of my old Compaq. Tech changes a lot in just 4 years! Besides, huh, I was a little careless with my old laptop. It almost got run over by a car once (true story). But hey, this Lenovo thing is awesome. It's not the best laptop in the world by far, but it's not bad at all either, and it suits my needs. Now I'm in that beautiful stage were I'm installing stuff like a madman, including my scanner and tablet drivers...! I'm gonna art the hell out of this thing. You heard it here first, folks!

So that's it for today's post. Sorry about the lack of proper drawings (I still doodled quite a bit on my notebook), but I'll make up for it! Does anybody have a specific request to make? Drop it, I'll see what I can do...

SANYO TV ad

SANYO is a Japanese electronics brand. My girlfriend had to do a presentation about it for her marketing class. She asked me for help, since she needed some sort of TV ad mock-up.

Ta-da! This is why I didn't upload anything yesterday--this thing took forever!

It has 4 seconds of pure hand drawn animation, wich in this case meant roughly 97 drawings. Simple as they are, 97 drawings is a pain to do. I respect animators so much after this... and thankfully I know how to work in Flash, if I hadn't it would have taken so much longer!

To any animators that stumble in this post by mistake chance, is there any particular software you reccomend? I should start working on drawing basics first... I also have no idea how to keep lines even when tracing my drawings from frame to frame. They go all jiggly, like in Home Movies, so I went along with it this time, but there has to be another way, right?

Nope, not dead! Internet was, so I didn't even bother updating yesterday.
It's pretty annoying. Even now, as I write this post, I feel like a castaway writing a letter, putting it in a bottle and throwing it off to the sea hoping someone reads it. Everytime I click on "publish" or "post" I cross my fingers, fearing the"website is not available" page. Some crazy stuff.

Oh, hey, a new Zelda came out! And if you're a Zelda fan, or visit any Zelda fansite, you know what that means!

Lame joke, but we all know that's happening already. I've also been tempted to download the game* (it costs a considerable amount of cash were I live) but I'll much rather wait for Christmas and treat myself. Besides, how can I mantain a blog and finish a new Zelda at the same time?

I haven't forgotten about my Pokémon comic but that takes longer to finish! These little interludes allow me to practice on photoshop and give me time to sort out my ideas (scripts are for little girls, manly artists use a plot summary on their heads and work from it!)
